How to Prevent Burglary and Home Invasion

Burglars have been around for as long as people have lived in homes – but it’s also a sad fact that home invasion (robbers barging into your house while you’re at home) is becoming more common. Following are a few ways to help prevent both burglary and home invasions.

BURGLARY

Lock Every Entrance – Nearly half of all burglars gain entrance through an unlocked door, window or garage. To reduce your risk, simply make sure that every door and window in your home is locked before you go to sleep or leave your home.

Light Up Your Life – Outdoor lights are a huge deterrent to burglars. Install floodlights with motion sensors all around the outside of your house.

Get an Alarm – Home security alarm systems are becoming more affordable every day. This is an ideal way to protect your home and family whether you are at home or away.

Eliminate Clues – Many burglars target homes because of piled up mail, newspapers or an absence of lights in the home at night. If you’re going to be away for a while, stop mail and newspaper delivery and put a few lamps in your home on timers.

HOME INVASION

Peepholes – Install a peephole in your front door (or a security camera) and use it wisely. Never open the door to anyone unless you know who they are and why they are at your door. Unknown salesmen or people claiming to be utility workers, deliverymen, etc. should not be let into your home.

Kick-proof Doors – Unfortunately, many home invaders will simply kick down your door. Consider installing a sturdy, solid wood or metal door with a very strong frame and heavy-duty deadbolt locks.

Alarm Signs – Post alarm company signs and/or stickers on or near your front door. Even if you don’t have an alarm, these can be an effective way to keep robbers away.
