Staying Safe on the Water
Having fun on the water is a big part of our way of life in Louisiana – from fishing to skiing to riding jet-skis or just going for a swim. While all of these activities are lots of fun, you should always be aware that there is an element of danger when you’re on the water. Boating accidents and various mishaps on the water are all too common – so we’ve provided you with some basic tips to help yourself and others stay safe.
Speed Kills – Whether piloting a top-of-the line bass boat, a simple aluminum skiff with an outboard motor or a jet ski – you need to keep your speed down in certain areas. This includes areas where there are a lot of boats close by (such as marinas) or whenever there are swimmers or other boaters near you.
Leave the Beer Onshore – Never operate any kind of watercraft when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Just as with car accidents, impaired operators cause a large percentage of watercraft accidents.
Say Yes to Life Jackets – Any time you get into a boat, make sure that there are enough life jackets for every person on board. It’s best for everyone to wear a lifejacket at all times, but at the very least there needs to be a sufficient number of life vests on board in case of an emergency.
Bring Safety Equipment – In addition to life jackets, it’s best to make sure that you have operative boat lights, a fire extinguisher, a flashlight and a first aid kit. It’s also a good idea to have a water-tight, floating pouch or container that can hold a cell phone, map and flares.
