Ways to Prevent Credit Card Fraud

One of the unfortunate side effects of today’s world of convenient smart devices and computers is that your credit card information is continuously at risk for theft. Following are a few simple things that you can do to protect yourself.

Keep Your Cards Safe – One of the simplest things you can do it to physically protect your cards. Keep your cards in your purse or wallet until ready to use. After you use the card to make a purchase, put it away quickly – since thieves can use their cell phone to take a photo of your card.

Don’t Give Out Your Information – The only time that you should ever give out your credit card number or sensitive info on the phone is if you have initiated the call yourself. Do not respond to voicemails or text messages requesting your credit card info – as this is a common tactic used by scammers.

Use a Document Shredder – When you get credit card statements in the mail, do not just throw them into the trash. You need to shred them first, because these statements contain your complete credit card number, which thieves can get by stealing your trash.

Beware of Junk Email – Email scams are one of the most common tactics used by credit card thieves. Never click on any email that looks like it comes from your bank, credit card company or other business that has your personal information. The email may look official, but this is how scammers trick people. If you need to contact the company, just go to their website yourself and log in to your account.

Be Careful Online – When using your card online, you need to be sure that the website you’re on is secure and 100% legitimate. A secure website will have “https://” in the address bar near the top of your web browser. It’s also a good idea to go to the website directly rather than following a link from an email or another web page.
